Does anyone else remember Wayne Williams? All of the black children being tragically killed in the Atlanta area? There were cries to stop every white male going through town because everybody knew that all serial killers were white men. I did not object to that, even though I am a white male. It did in fact seem to be the most logical assumption to make at the time. I did not see anything wrong then with specifically targeting or "profiling" the likely suspect than I do now. If white men were blowing up airplanes and attacking people, than they should get closer scrutiny. If blue haired Gramma's are posing an imminent threat, than they should receive more attention. What is really wrong with taking a closer look at the people who are known to be committing acts of violence against anyone? Cuss Words and Alternatives
Is there a difference between cuss words and “regular” words when the emotions, meanings and feelings behind them are the same? I know I cuss too much. According to my partner, any cussing is too much. I wonder though if it is the words that make it bad or simply the connotations.

A word is very simply a means of conveying an idea. What may be a disturbing word in one language may not be in another. This can even be true between two different dialects of the same language. A closer look and a comparison between American English and British English will clearly support this fact.

I know people who use such exclamations as “You WORM!” and “Pickled fudge feet!” in order to have a viable alternative to cussing. I wonder though, if this actually differs in any meaningful way from just saying the words that are implied.

If the word is truly just a method to communicate the idea and the whole idea behind the expression that is being used is the same, does that make the word the same? While it would certainly not be as offensive to other people around them, I think that as long as the necessary components are there, no matter what the actual comment is, it still holds the same meaning.

Pet Peeves

Am I the only one who ever really says exactly what is on their mind? One of my pet peeves is people who try to interpret what I say. Having lived in many cultures, I suppose I should clarify that. I do not mean in a linguistic sense. I do not mean translating from one language to another. I mean people who cannot understand that quite simply, I say what I mean and I mean what I say.

I know that with many people, even among native English speakers, I can be irritating. If you ever want to really bother someone, very simply answer the questions that people ask on a regular basis. Do not assume they mean one thing or are trying to say something other than what they say, but rather listen to what they say and answer that question in particular.

Examples:

· Q1: Do you know what time it is?

· Q2: Can you tell me what time it is?

The first question is asked of millions of people on a regular basis. It seems to be a very simple question, and it really is. The only thing is that it is the wrong question to ask. When someone asks me if I know what time it is, I look at my watch, and after finding out the correct time I answer their question.

· A1: Yes I do!

They will frequently look at me as if I am stupid and uncomprehending. I ask though, what have I done that is wrong or incorrect? I have answered the question they asked didn’t I? Why is it my fault if they did not ask the correct question? I submit to you that they are in error for failing to be able to ask the question that they want answered. Now let us look at the word “Can

If someone asks me, “Can you tell me what time it is?” I will answer their question as they asked it. If I have a means of finding out the correct time, or if I happen to already know what time it is at the moment, I will answer in the affirmative. Thus, my answer would be;

· A2 “Yes, I can tell you what time it is.”

At that point, I am done. I have answered the question that they asked. Once again, I do not believe that I have done anything wrong. They asked me whether I had the ability to tell them the correct time. Once again, they will most often look at me as if I am stupid. Once again, I have to question why I should be considered rude for answering the question that they have asked. They did not ask me to tell them what time it was, so I did not.

Mind you, when I am living in a foreign land, I understand that not everyone is going to speak with the clarity and understanding of the English language, which I possess, so I do not do that in other countries. My complaint here is of a similar nature though.

I had a bad night last night, so I was in a particularly gruff mood this morning. I have a nail hole in the bottom of my right foot and three massive blisters on it from having to walk in such an awkward manner. Truth be told, I really have been sick for roughly half the time since I have been back in the Philippines . My business partner is fully aware that I wish to live here and make a home here with her.

I stepped on a particularly rough section of ground and smacked the nail hole. It hurt to be quite blunt. I uttered an expletive, which I should not have done, and I am trying to quit, but it slipped out because of the pain. When she said something about it, which she did indeed have every right to do as she finds it particularly offensive, with good reason as well, I informed her that I have been sick about half the time since I have come back home. I told her that I just wanted to be well again.

Seizing the opportunity to interpret the meaning of my words rather than listening to what I said, she went into a tirade about how I do not wish to live here and I am traveling half way around the world for who knows whatever reason. There was no explanation for why I would be here if I did not want to be. There was no logical reasoning about the fact that I am here and not somewhere else and nobody is forcing me to stay. There was only a vast questioning of any dark and hidden meanings behind my words that I may have been wanting to say but did not.

It really is very simple; I say what I mean and I mean what I say. There is never any hidden agenda, there is never any underlying message, I only say what I mean to say. I do not know why that is so difficult for people to understand. I have a great family here. They have never been anything other than fully supportive and have gone out of their way to accommodate me where there are factors I may not know or need to consider.

If I had any desire to live elsewhere, I would be living there. If I had meant to say something else, I would have said something else. I fail to understand how that is such a difficult concept to grasp. I love it here, and quite honestly, if I never had to leave I would be quite happy.

If you think I am over reacting, try this little experiment with people around you. You will be surprised how many people get upset when you answer the questions they ask. Conversely, if you are not getting the answers you want, try changing the questions you are asking. Look at them and make sure you are really asking for exactly what it is that you want. If you expect people to make assumptions, than they will. Say what you mean and mean what you say. It really is very simple.

Have you ever noticed how some things are good looking from far away but still manage to stay far away from good looking? This is not about pretty or good-looking people. Although that may be the first thought that comes to many people’s minds. Rather, this is a view about many other things that we regularly see in the world.

Many people find the rain to be both very beautiful and very relaxing. Psychologists and psychiatrists alike have made tape recordings of it to give to people in order to help them soothe themselves and feel better when they are upset.

Sitting on a front porch or in an open window with a steaming hot cup of coffee (Or perhaps another refreshing beverage of choice) while the rain pours outside is actually a past time in many rural areas. While the very thought of doing this may bore some more active people to tears, it is in fact, a very relaxing time.

The lightning strikes put everything in a strange new light, giving mere glimpses at what surrounds the observer. Putting everything in a new light often helps the casual onlooker to see things as they really are. Many people come away from the experience with a better understanding of just how life can pass us by and how extemporaneous our efforts and our lives really are.

The thunder belies the weaknesses that we all share, but increases the awareness of the safety of our surroundings. It gives the observer a sense of comfort in many subliminal ways that the conscious mind has a difficult time comprehending.

This time allows people who are unable to work in the weather, a moment to converse and to reflect on the goings on around them. The sound of the rain falling on everything and the sounds of the water dripping, intertwined with the sound of running water playing lightly in the background is conducive to great conversations.

Many a great plan and conquest have come to life under just such circumstances as these. The time to think, mixed with the soothing sounds, encourage people to be creative and to think about things in a different perspective. This forces the creative side of the brain to come to life.

That same rain is quite different for those people who are unfortunate enough to be caught outside in a storm. The same rain that has been so soothing now seems to take on a life of its own. It pelts the trapped with an almost humanlike anger and ferocity.

The person left outside is rapidly transformed into a wet and dripping shadow of their former self. The cold takes over very rapidly; no matter how tightly the victim wraps them self, the cold will envelope them. It continuously creeps in until it takes over. They are now forced to look at their humanity from a position of weakness.

The hapless soul is quickly reminded of their own mortality. They are reminded by every beating rain drop of how weak and incapable they are against the superior forces of nature. They quickly come to realize that the natural elements have no mercy at all.

The same lightning, which gave to others, glimpses of hope and of fleeting moments in time now become ominous and threatening. Each flash teases them, daring them to try to find a way out of the dark and the cold. The light lasts only long enough to blind the victim when it is gone. The person lost in the fury of the storm must often struggle to make very little progress towards the safety of shelter.

Each flash in the sky carries with it a threat. The threat of being struck by lightning during a storm is very real. This is just one more reminder that the lost wanderer is still only a mere mortal and subject to mere chance and unforeseen circumstance that is beyond any control.

The thunder that seemed to be so gently rolling across the fields and the hills before, now seems to chase the person who only wants desperately to find some comfort and safety. It follows closely behind them, encouraging them, forcing them to move on in their blind and confused state of anxiety and discomfort.

What before only seemed to be a gentle rumble is now an ominous roar that constantly tracks their every move! It seems to laugh at them and tease them as they make their way uneasily through the darkness. The elements combine their forces against this hapless creature, creating feelings of insecurity and a sense of urgency only to be somewhere else.

Beauty, like so many things in the world where we live, is subject to opinion and perspective. The main factor still seems to be which side of the glass you are looking through. Many people do not understand the fear and anxiety of others. They freely scoff at the ideas and beliefs that they do not understand. Many people have never been trapped in the storm and felt its wrath. Try imagining for once, what life must be like on the other side.

Okay, yeah, I write SEO articles, and many of them are very small and very simple and with the local economy like it is, that helps me to supplement my meager income. I may not put it on all of my resumes and I doubt I will brag about it in my senior years, but whatever helps helps. I average about ten bucks an article. While it may not be much, it all adds up at the end of the month and helps to pay my bills. Today I get some mo-mo who gets all upset because I consistently write articles for one or two dollars a piece (I think he needs some remedial math) and gets upset because I will not write his newsletters for two bucks a piece. Am I the only one who remembers when the words "Great" and "American" went hand in hand? When did this phrase go from being an accepted truth to becoming an oxymoron?

Any of my regular readers will know I am not among the America hating crowd on the left, nor am I a member of the Nationalist movement on the right. I am simply someone who is saddened and disheartened by what my once Great and Proud Nation has become.

The reason I bring this up is that during one of many conversations with expatriates from around the world, we discussed Thomas Jefferson. He was a great man, despite his humanness and any subsequent flaws he may have had.

What struck me as odd was when I said "Great American:" it produced many raised eyebrows and looks of confusion. It was almost as if the concept of a great American was foreign to these people. No pun intended.

America has contributed a lot to the world. Even today, despite many claims to the contrary, America continues to be a caring and giving nation at its heart. America gives charitable contributions in amounts greater than any other nation on this earth. That is simply the truth and an irrefutable fact.

While this is not by any means a political diatribe, I think it is necessary that I state how I came to be an expatriate and why. I am not one of those seeking to blame America for the world’s problems. I do not hate America . Far from it, I love the country and the base principles under which it was founded. If few Americans are familiar with the constitution of the US , even fewer still are familiar with the Federalist papers. In these pages, our forefathers spoke very clearly of the problems we are facing in the world today and spoke with great foresight of what our country is going through now. I think that the base principle of the constitution has been perverted and twisted by both sides of our two-party system. The base principle was to create a Constitutional Republic with very limited government interference or rule. To quote Ronald Reagan; “Big government is not the solution, it is the problem.”

I wonder if this will include the long standing "Militarization" of the Southern Mexican border where rape, robbery and even murder have been long standing practices in the "apprehension" of illegal aliens entering Southern Mexico?

Strange I should come across this. I was actually looking for information about a "new" undocumented charity in the US trying to solicit funds for people here locally who know nothing about it.
